News

I was watching the news today and heard the story about two teachers undressed in a empty classroom. Of course this is very unprofessional and deserves disciplinary actions. In no way is there an excuse for what they did and whatever consequences they may receive  they deserve .

On the other hand, the reporter who covered the story was very sexist and made it seem like it was a scene out of a porno. Instead of reporting the news, the reporter used clever words to degrade the women even more then they were. The reporter could have easily said that two teachers were caught doing inappropriate things in a class and are being investigated, but he didn’t because that is not what gets the news high ratings. The reporter said things like this isn’t the sex ed. class you might have in mind. He begins the story by saying the action was hot and heavy bk style, then he continues by saying during a talent show they were in the class showing each other their own talents. The reporter continues by saying that the custodian caught the alluring linguist speaking the language of love.  This is basically adding more fuel to the fire and instead of the news being a positive role model to society and saying it is wrong lets do something about it. They want to tease and make a parade out of something that should be handled professionally and appropriately.

The story was compared to television series 90210 and gossip girls. The reporter’s story is going to have a indirect affect on how young males view their young teachers and label them with negative stereotypes. The reporter is basically labeling all young teachers as party girls who like to have fun. After hearing this story people will think it is not about two people who made a mistake, but about two people who got caught in their lustful relationship. The media is  suppose to have responsible journalist with a duty to delivery factual and unbias information, but  now-a-days it seems like its just another form of entertainment.

Where is he?

On KTLA i was watching how a college professor found a way to  predict where Osama Bin Laden is hiding. I feel this was an indirect shot at the Obama administration, since they mention that they want to kill or capture Bin Laden. The media makes it seem like the Obama administration is doing a horrible job on terrorism because why is it that a college professor with limited resources can narrow bin Laden’s location and the government can not. The government has unlimited resources and technology which can help find Osama but since 9/11, the US has been unsuccessful.  The media is basically telling the Audience that our government is failing and can not bring us justice. The reporter later says  if the government uses this technology will they find him and if they find him what will they do about it. Another shot at our government by telling them that they are inactive and passive.

Trouble in Toyland! What not to Buy this Holiday Season.

November 28, 2009 by bramirez90016

i was online reading the news, when i came upon an article that was titled, “Trouble in Toyland, what not to Buy this Holiday Season.” My first instinct was that there was a big recall on toys this holiday season. Parents all look for the prefect gift for their children and there being a recall puts parents on the edge; thinking that they possibly purchased a product that was dangerous.

After reading the article i was very disappointed. The article did talk about two items that were potentially dangerous to children but,  the first item was already pulled off the shelves and the second was a loud cell phone that can cause a lost in hearing. The article never went in to details of new dangerous toys. The writer just gave basic information on what is a safe and unsafe toy for children. i find this article to be a waste of time because toys already come with warning labels and appropriate age usage. What also makes this article more useless is that the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, the group that tests the toys, said the toys are safer then the previous year.

The title says trouble in toy land, what not to buy, but even the government officials that run the tests say they are safe. The media needs to stop using fear as a strategy to get reads and give the people the straight facts.

Racism

November 21, 2009 by bramirez90016

I was watching CNN when i came to a story that was about a woman in Wal-Mart a women cut in line. She then proceeded to move customer’s items off the conveyor belt to have hers scanned. The police were called and she was arrested for disturbing the peace, but not before cursing and kicking police.I first began to think it was just another crazy person in the news but then began to read more of the story and realized this case was about prejudice.

This women did not cut in line but joined her cousin in line who she was shopping with. The clerk did not want to give  her change and the police were called. She was naturally upset and the police arrested her as she protested that she had done nothing wrong in an inappropriate manner.

The real twist to this story is when this case begin to work its way to court. Heather Ellis was given a pled deal of no jail time if she dropped the charges on the police or else faced a possible 15 years behind bars. The catch to this pled deal was that she could not talk about the case. Ellis refused and continued on to trial. Now here is where it gets interesting, all the witnesses had similar stories but they did not add up. When the witnesses were cross-examined it was discovered that the prosecutor had a meeting with all the witnesses, where they could have possibly all came to a agreement on a story. There were even people waving confederate flags out in public. Also during a rally, cards were found from the kkk with treats.

The thing that is important about the this story is not about the incident itself but of the events that have occurred after the incident. Ellis had a case that looked like she was not going to be able to win with police officers taking the stand against her, also patrons from Wal-Mart, and an obvious surveillance tape of Ellis resisting arrest.

The hard work from Ellis lawyer is showed off as he proved that the witnesses are not a reliable source since to opposing side has set up meeting with them. Also the tapes do not show the important parts of the tape, like what led to Ellis’s actions or what other Wal-Mart customers did to provoke her actions.

The community is torn into two, with racist individuals trying to scare the brave minority. I still find it hard to believe that in an age of great diversity, there are still people who can not live together based on race. The most important thing that comes out this story is that this case is showing the issue of racism that still exist in America. The problem though is that the media is just focus on the case and not the bigger picture, that racism is the cause of this case and an even bigger problem in this community. I think CNN miss the real story on how racism is still going on and is not being address.

pity crime

Three boys were given tickets for rapping their  order at a drive thru. They  got to the window, rap their order, and left without buying anything. The owner felt a need to call the authorities because he felt his employees safety were at risk. The police found the boys at their school parked, where he processed to give them citations for disorderly conduct.

I find it very silly that the cops found it very necessary to give the boys tickets away from were they had caused the so-called disturbance. I would think police would have more important things to do  like catch real criminals and not teenagers acting silly. I understand a officer’s job is to protect the community but whose is he protecting  by citing kids who are rapping.

Also why would the owner of the restaurant feel the safety of his employees were in danger? The teenagers did not have any weapons or drugs on them. None of the property was damage or stolen. There was no need to call the police for something as small as a couple of immature teenagers. There are worst and more dangerous things that can occur, thats worth calling the police, but that incident is more of boys being boys

This Just In…

Why is it that every other story on the news is breaking news and life threatening? I have heard some pretty ridiculous titles for stories that when you hear the actual story, it is nothing the title claimed. Anything can kill you from vegetables to gyms.

Even though a story is worth telling, the media exasperate the truth or the importance of the story to increase ratings. Something as rare as a shooting in a gym leads to headline news as, Why are gyms no longer safe? News try to manipulate an uncommon event to something that can easily occur to anyone.  This is very disturbing because people are fearing things that should not be feared and things that are of real danger like obesity are left in the back burner.

commercials

October 17, 2009 by bramirez90016

I was watching television before i went to work and tuned in to a show called Maury. This show  deals with more controversal topics like paternity tests and misbehaved teens. When it came to commercials i noticed that more than half of them were about getting a certificate at a vocational school. Also, the actors that were portraying students were all minorities.  The commercials also made very stereotypical comments like, ” I was like you, at house doing nothing” or “what do you got to lose?”

I figured out that the media stereotyped its viewers. How can society expect people to not be stereotypical, when people are being stereotyped on t.v. everyday. What will a young African American boy who toke a sick day off of  school say? This sends a negative message to child and young adults, since it looks so much easier to go to a vocational school then a 4 year university. Media is shaping the minds of people who watch t.v. the most, the children. Instead of challenging minorities, media is sending the message that they should conform to lower degrees since its faster and easier.

The Show Must Go On

October 3, 2009 by bramirez90016

I was watching Good Morning America, when i saw the story pertaining to a hit show on TLC call Jon and Kate Plus Eight. The show is about the daily lives of a family with eight children. It shows the difficulties the family goes through and also their happiest moments. The cameras never turn away, even when the parents are being total opposites of roll models. The cameras have become a part of the children’s  everyday lives.  When the family is fighting or the parents are overwhelmed with all the attention needed for 8 kids, the carema were still rolling.

However now that the father, Jon Gosselin, has gotten kick out of the show, he does not want his children to be film. Jon claims that this is a tough time for the children and it is not appropriate for the children to be filmed. Now lets take a minute to think about this. The divorce has been on going for months now and he did not say anything about filming the kids. Until recently that the network, TLC, dropped Joh from the show did he immediately called for the show to be cancelled. Now he is taking action to protect his kids. This does not make any sense to be, the kids have all knew about the divorce months before he attempted to take them off air. What is he protecting them from? It is not like the kids do not understand what is going on, since this divorce has been going on for some time now.

It is obvious that Jon is trying to cancel the show because he is no longer going to be a part of it. If Jon really care about the well being of his children, he would have  tried to cancel the show before the divorce was announced. Even though Jon claims he try to cancel the show earlier, why is it now that he is taking dramatic action to keep cameras away from the kids. The obvious answer is that he finally figured out that the show will go on without him.

Who is really getting hurt?

September 19, 2009 by bramirez90016

I was listening to NPR today and i heard the story concerning acorn. An Acorn worker was helping a “pimp and a hoe”, which turned out to be a right winged film director. The worker was not following proper protocol when becoming aware that the customer was potentially carrying out illegal actions that went against Acorn policy. The conservatives are having a field day with this issue. They have repeatedly shown it on news stations, basically calling it a corrupt organized with shady practices. The Government has even seized all funding to this organization.

After going onto the acorn website, this organization seems very great for the community. It provides low income families housing opportunities, children better educational experiences and they also set up The Foreclosure Avoidance Program. This organization is very important to the low income families, especially in the current economic situation the U.S. is in. With the rising of the unemployment rate, Americans need an organization like Acorn to help them find solutions financial issues.

With the current issue of an employee handling a situation entirely incorrectly, i believe the organization toke the right steps in terminating her. However i do not think it is correct for the whole organization to be punished by taking funding. The appropriate action would have been to rehire new workers and to train and supervise the new employees to better serve the community professionally. As far as the government funding, they should continuing funding this organization but with closer supervision. At the end of the day it is the people of America who really need this organization to survive.

WOMEN

September 11, 2009 by bramirez90016

Today i was watching the news online at ktla.com. Out of all the stories i read or watched, two stories really grabbed my attention. The First story was of college students who get van rides from a school funded program. The purpose of this program is to keep students safe at night by providing rides. The van rides help students become less vulnerable to crimes and violence. Recently two hispanic males have been posing as USC employees  and trying to give female  students rides. The van looks very similar to the USC van but does not have the USC logo on the side. Also the two men are going around offering rides which the program does not offer. Out of three reported victims none have gotten into the van. The next story that interested me was about a women getting pulled over by a fake cop. He pulled her over , then began to ask her inappropriate questions for example “DO you have a boyfriend?”. The fake cop then began to touch her leg sexually. The guy was in a black and white car similar to police vehicles and was wearing a police uniform.

The reason these two stories were very interesting to me is because it scares me to think how cautious women have to be.In both stories the supposed organization who was attacking the women  were put in place to provide a service instead it is giving predators another opportunity to attack women. Granted it is not the organization fault the these women are being attacked or targeted. The main issue is that women more than men, have to be very careful at all times and not easily persuaded. After hearing about both stories, it feels as if women could physically be taken advantage of at any moment. I am very disturbed because these stories could have turned out very different. One of the students from USC could have taken that ride and the two men could have violated her and all because she trusted someone who is suppose to help others.

What does this do to society? What does this teach young ladies? To not trust anyone because anyone can be a sex predator even officers. i am dumfounded  to what this world is coming to. i believe it is because of events like these that people rather keep to themselves then to be friendly or social.
